DETAILS for the WEEK-END INTENSIVE:

FRIDAY:

18.00 – 20.00 – workshop: ARM BALANCES AND HANDSTAND

Arm balances show up throughout the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. From the first jump back in the Sun Salutations, the opportunity to balance appears again and again. When we commit to these opportunities to embrace the work of arm balancing, we begin to develop strength and deepen our focus

SATURDAY:

9.00 – 11.00 – TRADITIONAL SANSKRIT COUNTED LED FULL PRIMARY SERIES

David and Jelena will lead you through Ashtanga’s Primary Series with the traditional Sanskrit count, and include some detailed instructions along the way. Prepare to work very hard!

13.00 – 15.00 – workshop: ASHTANGA’S GATEKEEPERS

When learning the Ashtanga sequence, there are certain postures that must be completed before progressing on to the next pose. These poses are often referred to as Gatekeepers, and they are an important part of the traditional sequencing and development in one’s asana practice. This workshop will take a detailed look at some of Gatekeepers in the Primary Series, and offer guidance and tips on how to safely work towards the full expression of these asanas.

15.30 – 17.30 – workshop: PAIN-FREE BACKBENDS

Backbends don’t have to hurt! This workshop will explore the basic alignment and actions of Ashtanga’s Primary & Intermediate Series backbends. By learning correct technique for the poses allow your heart to open, and your body to safely go deeper into the postures.

SUNDAY:

08.00 – tbd – MYSORE STYLE

Mysore is the traditional format for practicing Ashtanga Yoga. Led classes are a fantastic way to learn about the vinyasa, but Mysore-style is where you follow your own breath and deepen your focus and meditation skills. David and Jelena lead one of the world’s largest mysore programs at their home studio, http://www.ashtangatoronto.com (Shifts will be communicated closer to the event)

13.00h – 14.00h – TALK: ASHTANGA YOGA FOR LIFE: an overview of the eight-limbed path

We will discuss and learn about the philosophy, history, theory and technique of the Ashtanga Yoga method as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson R. Sharath Jois in Mysore, India. We will look at the deep connection of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga to the natural cycles; the transformative power of the practice over time, and how the practice is adapted and applied in our daily modern life. We will look at a range of issues, including those important to the female practitioners such as pregnancy/fertility/cycle, practitioners with special needs and injuries, and age.

14.15h – 16.15h workshop: JUMP BACK & JUMP THROUGH

Jump-backs and jump-throughs are the transitional movements that link Ashtanga’s sitting poses together. These vinyasas provide a bridge to carry our focus between asanas, and also build a purifying heat in the body that is said to boil the blood. This workshop will go over the actions and movements of the jump-back and jump-through in close detail, and provide valuable instructions useful for practitioners of all levels.
